Picture of the Day: Astringent Moments in Turkish Airspace

The picture shows an Airbus A320-200 from Turkish Airlines on its way to Istanbul based Atatürk Airport after going around the first time. Reports say that the right gear and engine failed  during a first landing attempt with significant damage to the wing. Subsequently problems with the engine were reported by the pilots, the engine caught fire and the Airbus slid off the run way during its emergency landing. The Airbus slid off the runway with a failed gear, inoperative right engine and without trailing edge devices, which forces the pilot to approach the runway with a high velocity.
On board of TK1878 were 97 passengers flying from Milan to Istanbul. No injuries have been reported.
